Description

First light of my recently acquired "new" vintage Celestron C8 SCT from the late 90s. For this image the scope was thoroughly undermounted. It rode on my poor AZ-GTI with 3kg counterweights to get is balanced enough. But... alas, it slewed, it tracked and it wobbled.

Still, it was stable enough to use an hour of break in the clouds to tackle the first collimation and then point it at Mars. FireCapture's image stabilization is a god-send for focussing.

The quality of the image is mediocre. But Mars is already quite small and seeing wasn't the best (had to shoot within a few degrees of my house-wall).

Single 4min video, stacked 3k frames. Usual processing in AstoSurface, Registax and Affinity Photo. Presented in native capture scale.
